# AI Agent

> The Mammoth AI Agent is a chat inside the app that answers questions about your data and does the work. Where it appears, who can use it, and how it differs.

The AI Agent is a chat inside the Mammoth web app. Say what you want in plain words: the agent answers questions, makes charts, cleans and combines data, builds dashboards and connects sources, with your own access.

The AI Agent, including Ask mode and the Today page, is available on Enterprise plans.

## Where the agent appears

| Where | What you see |
| --- | --- |
| Left navigation | **Agent**, marked "beta". See [Chat with the agent](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/agent/chat/). |
| A dataset's page and the **Automations** tab | **Ask**, a chat docked beside the page. See [Ask about a dataset or your automations](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/agent/chat/#ask-about-a-dataset-or-your-automations). |
| Notifications bell | An **Agent** group. See [Agent notifications](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/monitor/notifications/#agent-notifications). |
| Connector workspace | The chat that builds a connector. See [Add a connector with the connector workspace](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/connectors/connector-workspace/). |
| Export panel | **Somewhere else…**, for a destination with no built-in export. See [Send to destinations](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/export-share/send-to-destinations/). |
| Email | agent@mammoth.io. See [Email the agent](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/workspace-management/profile-settings/#email-the-agent). |
| Slack | @Mammoth, once an owner connects Slack. See [Slack](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/workspace-management/ai-agent-access/#slack). |

When Ask mode is on, the top of the left navigation also has an **Ask** and **Build** switch. Ask is a read-only side of the app built around the agent. See [Ask mode](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/agent/ask-mode/).

## Who can use it

A Workspace Owner controls the agent for the whole workspace on the **AI Agent** page of Workspace Settings. Only Workspace Owners see that page. See [AI Agent access](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/workspace-management/ai-agent-access/).

| Person | What the agent does for them |
| --- | --- |
| Someone who can edit a project | The agent in Build, for the projects they can edit. It can change data there. |
| Someone who can only view a project | Nothing while Ask mode is off. With Ask mode on, the agent answers about the project but changes nothing. |
| A guest invited to Ask | Ask only, about the projects and files picked for them. Guests have a monthly question limit. |

The agent never does more than your own access allows. When **Enable agents for this workspace** is off, no one has an agent, and the Agent page says "Agents are off in this workspace".

## How it differs from the MCP server and the CLI

| | AI Agent | [Mammoth MCP server](https://mammoth.io/docs/agents/mcp/) | [CLI](https://mammoth.io/docs/build/cli/) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Where it runs | Inside the Mammoth web app | In your own AI client, such as Claude or ChatGPT | In your terminal and scripts |
| Who drives it | You, in the chat | Your AI client calls Mammoth's tools | You or your script, one command at a time |

The MCP server works on every Mammoth plan. The in-app AI Agent is available on Enterprise plans.

The CLI can also talk to the in-app agent: `mammoth agent chat` sends a message and waits for the reply. See [Continue a chat from the CLI](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/agent/chat/#continue-a-chat-from-the-cli).

The **Generative AI** and **AI SQL** steps in a pipeline are not the agent. They are pipeline steps you add yourself. See [Generative AI](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/transform/generative-ai/) and [AI SQL query](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/transform/ai-sql-query/).
