# Edit, reorder and copy tasks in a Mammoth pipeline

> Manage pipeline tasks in Mammoth: edit, suspend, reorder, copy, paste and delete tasks, preview data at a task, and restore an earlier pipeline version.

You manage tasks from the **Pipeline** panel on the left of a View. Hover a task card for its toolbar (edit, suspend, copy, note and **More options**), drag cards to reorder them, and open **More Pipeline options (...)** for Draft mode, paste and version history. For how tasks run in the first place, see [How the pipeline works](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/clean-and-shape/how-the-pipeline-works/).

## Use the Pipeline panel header

The header shows the task count (or "No tasks") and four controls. While Draft mode is on, a **Draft mode ON** label also appears.

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Search** | Finds a task in the pipeline. Appears once the pipeline has eight or more cards. |
| **Cards Density** | Switches task cards between Large and Compact, and turns **Display notes** on or off. |
| **More Pipeline options (...)** | Draft mode toggle, Auto-sync options (when Auto-sync is available to you), **Pipeline Version history**, **Paste** and **Clear clipboard**. |
| **Collapse** (\|← icon) | Collapses the panel into a narrow strip of mini task cards, giving the grid more width. Click the open icon at the top of the strip to expand it again. |

## Read a task card

Each card shows the function name, a summary of its settings, and the row count after it ran. Hover the **info icon (ⓘ)** for an audit tooltip: who last modified the task, when, and how long its last run took.

## Edit, suspend or copy a single task

Hover any task card to show its toolbar.

| Action | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Add note** | Attaches a note to the task. Turn on **Display notes** in Cards Density to show notes on the cards. |
| **Suspend** (pause icon) | Turns the task off without deleting it. The card shows "Suspended" and the task is skipped when the pipeline runs. Use it to see the result without that task while keeping its settings. |
| **Restore** | Replaces Suspend on a suspended task and turns it back on. |
| **Copy** | Copies the task's settings to the clipboard, to paste in another position or another View. Disabled for Edit Cells tasks and for tasks in an error state. |
| **Edit** (pencil icon) | Reopens the configuration panel so you can change the settings. |
| **More options (...)** | **Rename**, **Duplicate**, **Paste below** and **Delete**. |

![Task More options menu open, listing Rename, Duplicate, Paste below and Delete](https://mammoth.io/docs/images/20260417_091058_MoreoptionsmenushowingRenameDuplicatePastebelow1.webp)

On an action or export task, **More options** has **Run now** and **Delete** instead, plus an **Auto-sync** toggle at the top where the task supports it. A task that publishes to a managed database also has **Show credentials** and **Regenerate credentials**.

### Rename, duplicate or delete a task

1. Hover the task card and click **More options (...)**.
2. Choose an action:
   - **Rename** gives the task a descriptive name. Useful in long pipelines where the function name isn't specific enough.
   - **Duplicate** opens the configuration panel filled with the task's settings. Apply it to add the copy. Not offered for Edit Cells tasks.
   - **Delete** removes the task. Mammoth first checks whether later tasks depend on its columns or logic, and warns you if they do.

## Copy and paste tasks between Views

1. Hover the task and click **Copy**.
2. Open the View where you want it (the same View or another).
3. Choose **Paste below** from the **More options** menu of any task, or **Paste** from **More Pipeline options (...)** to paste at the end of the pipeline.

Copied tasks keep all their settings, including parameter bindings. **Clear clipboard** in **More Pipeline options (...)** empties the clipboard.

![Animation of copying a task with its hover toolbar and pasting it below another task](https://mammoth.io/docs/images/20260513_141413_Createacopyandpaste1.webp)

## Reorder tasks in the pipeline

1. Drag a task card up or down in the panel.
2. A bar appears at the bottom with the warning "Reordering tasks may affect your data."
3. Click **Reorder Tasks** to save the new order, or **Cancel** to put the tasks back. **Reorder Tasks** stays disabled until you have moved a task.

Mammoth checks dependencies before it saves. If moving a task would break a later task, it shows a warning. When the reorder succeeds, "Tasks reordered successfully" confirms it.

## Select several tasks to copy, suspend or delete

Hover a task card and tick its checkbox. The panel switches to select mode and the header becomes a selection toolbar:

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Select all checkbox | Selects or clears every task in the pipeline. |
| **n selected** | Shows how many tasks are selected, for example **3 selected**. |
| **Copy** | Copies the selected tasks to the pipeline clipboard ("Tasks copied successfully"). Paste them with **Paste below** or **Paste**, in this View or another. |
| **Suspend** | Suspends the selected tasks after a confirmation. |
| **Restore** | Turns the selected suspended tasks back on after a confirmation. |
| **Delete** | Deletes the selected tasks after a confirmation. |
| X | Leaves select mode. |

The action buttons stay disabled until at least one task is selected. Dashboard steps have no checkbox, so you can't select them.

## Search a long pipeline for a task

Once the pipeline has eight or more cards, a search icon appears in the panel header.

1. Click the search icon.
2. Type in the **Search on Pipeline** box. The panel shows only matching cards under an **All results** header, with a counter such as "2/5".
3. Use the up and down arrows to step through the matches.
4. Close the search with the X in the search box. The full pipeline comes back.

If nothing matches, the panel shows "No results found" and "Try searching something else".

## See the data as it was after a task

You can look at the data right after any task without changing the pipeline.

1. Find the row count in the footer of a task card that has run, such as "1,240 rows". Its tooltip reads "Preview Data at this Task".
2. Click the row count. A banner at the top of the grid reads "Previewing Data at Task 3..." (with that task's number), and the card's row count is highlighted. Its tooltip reads "Click to Exit Preview".
3. To leave, click **Exit Preview [Esc]** in the banner, press **Esc**, or click the highlighted row count again.

While you preview:

- The Transform menu, the Export and share menu, the Column browser and the Combine menu are unavailable. Their tooltips say, for example, "The grid data is in preview mode. Try exiting to access the Transform menu."
- Task cards hide their action menus, and you can't drag columns to reorder them.

Preview isn't offered on export or action steps, while the pipeline has an error, while cells are being edited, or while Draft mode is applying changes. The Source card can be previewed once the pipeline has at least one task.

## Keep export steps at the end of the pipeline

Export and action steps, such as Send to Dataset or a database export, usually belong after every transformation. By default they stay at the end of the pipeline, below a divider labelled **Tasks pinned to the end**. A new transformation goes above that divider, so the export still sends the fully transformed data.

To change this for one step:

1. Edit the step.
2. In its panel, **Task Position** shows **End of Pipeline** or **Not at end of Pipeline**.
3. Clear **Keep at the end of the Pipeline** to let the step stay where it is as you add tasks after it.

## Run an export or action step now

Export and action steps run when the pipeline runs. To run one on demand, open its **More options** (three-dot) menu and select **Run now**. A "Running action" message appears, then "Action ran successfully" when it finishes.

**Run now** is disabled when:

- the pipeline has an error;
- the step is suspended;
- Draft mode has changes that aren't applied yet;
- the step's destination dataset has been deleted;
- a Live Link step has no link yet;
- the workspace is View-only.

The same menu has an **Auto-sync** toggle at the top on steps that support it. See [Views: create, rename and delete](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/organise/views/) for Auto-sync on one destination step.

### Show or regenerate managed database credentials

A step that publishes the View to a Mammoth-managed database has two more items in its **More options** menu:

- **Show credentials** shows the connection details for the database, to use in a BI tool or other application.
- **Regenerate credentials** creates new credentials after a confirmation. The dialog warns: "All views are published to the same database. You will need to update the credentials on any third party applications that use this data." On success you see "New credentials generated".

## See which Views read from this one

When other Views read this View's data through a Join or Lookup task, a **Dependent Views (n)** link appears at the bottom of the Pipeline panel, next to **Display Changes**. The number is how many such links there are, for example **Dependent Views (2)**.

1. Click the link. The **Dependent Views** dialog opens: "This View is sending data via JOIN or LOOKUP to the following destinations:".
2. Each row shows the destination View and its Auto-sync state. Tick the rows you want.
3. Select **Enable auto-sync** or **Disable auto-sync**.
4. Select **Apply changes**.

This controls whether those Views update automatically when this View changes. In a View-only workspace the link shows but doesn't open.

If the View feeds dashboards or exports with Auto-sync on, Mammoth asks before a change sends new data to them. You can pause them while you edit. See [Pause sends while you edit](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/clean-and-shape/pause-sends/).

## Restore a task whose View is in Trash

A suspended Join or Lookup task reads data from another View. If that View is now in Trash, **Restore** opens a **View in Trash** dialog instead of restoring the task. It lists each View as "View name (in Dataset name)" and explains: "Choose "Restore view and continue" to bring them back from Trash first, then restore this task."

- Select **Restore view and continue** to restore the View from Trash, then the task.
- Select **Cancel** to leave both as they are.

See [Get things back from Trash](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/organise/trash/).

## Restore an earlier version of the pipeline

1. Open **More Pipeline options (...)** > **Pipeline Version history**.
2. Select a version to preview its tasks.
3. Choose **Copy pipeline**, **Save as template** or **Restore this version**. To reuse part of it, select individual tasks and click **Copy tasks**, then paste them elsewhere.

How many older versions you can see depends on your plan.

## Troubleshooting task actions

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Copy** is greyed out on a task | The task is an Edit Cells task, or it's in an error state | Fix the error first. Edit Cells tasks can't be copied. |
| No **+** button below a card | The card is in an error state | Fix the failing task. See [Fix a failing step](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/clean-and-shape/fix-a-failing-step/). |
| The search icon is missing | The pipeline has fewer than eight cards | Scroll the panel instead. |
| A row count won't open a preview | The step is an export or action step, the pipeline has an error, cells are being edited, or Draft mode is applying changes | Wait, or fix the error, then try again. |
| **Run now** is greyed out | One of the conditions listed under Run an export or action step now | Clear that condition, for example apply pending Draft mode changes. |
