# Custom charts

> Describe a chart the Mammoth chart library doesn't have, let the AI draw it from your data, and save it as a workspace chart your team can reuse.

When none of the 44 chart types draws what you have in mind, describe the chart in words and the AI draws it from your data. You make custom charts in the dashboard editor, from the **Add a chart** dialog or the AI chat, and you can save one as a workspace chart so everyone in your workspace can reuse it. Anyone who can edit the dashboard can make a custom chart.

The numbers in a custom chart always come from your data. The AI only decides the drawing: shapes, sizes, positions and labels. It can't calculate or invent values.

## Open the custom chart studio

In the dashboard editor, click **Add** in the header to open **Add a chart**, then do any of these:

- Click the last tile in the gallery, **Custom chart** ("Describe it").
- Click the **Custom** chip, then **Custom chart** under **New custom chart**.
- Search for a chart type that doesn't exist and click "No chart types match — Describe it as a custom chart". Your search text is filled in for you.
- Search "custom", "describe" or "bespoke".

Custom charts can't be added to a comparison page, so the **Custom** chip and tile are hidden there. See [Dashboard charts](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/dashboard/charts/) for the rest of the picker.

## Describe the drawing and draw it

1. In **Describe the drawing**, write what you want to see. For example: "a pipe that narrows at each stage, with the share that goes on written at each join". You can use up to 500 characters.
2. Click **Draw it**. The button reads "Drawing the chart…" while it works.
3. Check the result in the preview (**Live preview · your data**).
4. Click **Add chart**, or press ⌘ + ↩.

Nothing is saved to the dashboard until you click **Add chart**. **Back to charts** returns to the gallery.

### What the AI can answer

The AI first checks whether a chart in the library already draws what you described. You get one of these answers:

| Answer | What you see | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| A library chart fits | The chart it used and what it shows, for example "Used the Funnel chart. It shows the row count by Stage." | **Use** and the chart name (for example **Use Funnel**) opens the normal studio for that chart type. **I still want a custom one** draws it as a custom chart anyway. |
| A custom drawing | The chart, drawn from your data | Add it, or change the description and draw again. |
| A stand-in | For example "Showing Table instead of your custom chart.", with the reason | Add the stand-in, or describe the chart differently. |
| Refused | "Nothing drawn. Add the closest chart, or describe another." | A button such as **Add a Bar instead** adds the closest chart. The AI refuses projections and forecasts, because a chart can only show data you have. |

If you describe a funnel over a status field, the studio explains that each bar shows its share of the total, not a step rate, for example "Status is a status, not a sequence of stages, so each bar shows its share of the total rather than a step rate."

If the drawing can't be written, try again in a moment ("The drawing couldn't be written just now.").

### Choose the data to use

**Data to use** shows the columns the chart reads, each marked as **text**, **number** or **%**. Click **+ Add field** to add another measure. The line below says where the data comes from, for example "From Orders · all rows".

### Adjust the drawing recipe

The **Drawing recipe** is the AI's instructions for drawing the chart, one setting per line. Click **Edit** to change it by hand. It's collapsed when you add a chart and open when you edit a custom chart that's already on the dashboard.

- "Shapes, sizes, positions and labels only. To change a number, change the data."
- If a change can't be drawn, the recipe shows "1 problem" or, for example, "3 problems" and says why.
- **Reset to the AI's version** undoes your edits. It's enabled once you've changed something.

## Save a custom chart as a workspace chart

A workspace chart is a custom chart saved so anyone in your workspace can add it from the **Custom** chip, on any dashboard.

You can only save a custom chart that's already on a dashboard. You can't save from the **Add a chart** dialog.

1. Click the custom chart on the canvas to open it in the edit panel.
2. In **Save as a workspace chart**, type a **Name**.
3. Check the **Needs:** line. It lists the columns a dashboard must have to use this chart, such as "a Region column".
4. Click **Save as a workspace chart**. "Everyone in this workspace can add it from the Custom chip."

On success you see "Saved to your workspace charts." and the button reads **Saved** until you change the name or the recipe, so you can't save a duplicate by clicking twice.

### Limits

| Limit | Rule |
|---|---|
| Workspace charts per workspace | Up to 200. Delete one to save another. |
| Name | 1 to 80 characters |
| Needed columns | 1 to 8 |

## Add a chart from Your workspace charts

1. Click **Add** → **Chart**, then the **Custom** chip.
2. Under **Your workspace charts**, with a count such as "3 saved", each tile shows the chart's name, a thumbnail and who saved it ("saved by" and their name).
3. Click one. The studio opens with the chart drawn on this dashboard's data.
4. Click **Add chart**.

A tile is disabled, with a note such as "Needs a Region column", when this dashboard's data doesn't have a column the chart needs.

The dashboard gets its own copy of the chart. Later changes to the saved chart, or deleting it, don't affect dashboards that already use it. The new chart is titled from its data, not from the saved name.

Workspace charts aren't offered on comparison pages.

## Delete a workspace chart

1. Click **Add** → **Chart** → **Custom**.
2. On the chart's tile, click **⋯** → **Delete**.
3. Confirm the question that names the chart, for example "Delete Pipeline?" ("Boards that already use it keep their copy."). Click **Delete**.

If it fails, you see "Couldn't delete it. Try again."

## Who can save and delete workspace charts

| Action | Who |
|---|---|
| Make a custom chart on a dashboard | Anyone who can edit the dashboard |
| Add a workspace chart to a dashboard | Anyone who can edit the dashboard |
| Save or delete a workspace chart | Workspace owners, admins and members |

Any owner, admin or member can delete any workspace chart, not only the ones they saved. Guests, and dashboard editors with no workspace role, don't see the save section or the **⋯** menu.

## Make a custom chart from the AI chat

You can also ask for a custom chart in the dashboard editor's AI chat, for example "draw revenue as a pipe that narrows at each stage". The reply carries buttons for what happened:

| Button | When it appears | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| **How this was made** | The AI drew a custom chart | Opens the chart's drawing recipe. |
| **Use the closest:** plus a chart name, such as **Use the closest: Funnel** | The AI drew a custom chart | Replaces it with the closest library chart. |
| **I still want a custom one** | The AI used a library chart instead | Redraws it as a custom chart. |
| Add a chart instead, such as **Add a Bar instead** | The AI refused (for example, a forecast) | Adds the closest chart your data can show. |

The buttons that change the dashboard only work on the latest reply. See [The dashboard editor](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/dashboard/dashboard-editor/) for the AI chat.
