# Change a dashboard's data, copy it or export to Power BI

> Rebuild a Mammoth dashboard on new data with Change data, copy it onto another dataset with field mapping, or export it to Power BI or Tableau with the data inside.

You can rebuild a dashboard on new data with **Change data**, build a new copy of it on another dataset with **Copy onto another dataset**, or export it to Power BI or Tableau. All three start from the caret next to **Publish** in the [dashboard editor](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/dashboards/editor/). You need edit access to the dashboard, and exports are for editors only.

## Choose between Change data and Copy onto another dataset

Open the **Data** tab in the editor to see the dashboard's sources (see [See the data behind a dashboard](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/dashboards/dashboard-data/)). You have two ways to put a board on other data:

| | **Change data** | **Copy onto another dataset** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Result | The same board, rebuilt on new data | A new dashboard; the original stays untouched |
| Use it when | Your data moved, or you're replacing sample data | You want the same board for another team, client or region |

### Rebuild this dashboard on new data with Change data

Open **Change data** from the **Publish** caret menu, or from a source card in the **Data** tab. On sample data both read **Use my data**.

1. In the **Use different data** dialog (**Use your own data** from sample data), pick a dataset from your library, or add new data. If your library is empty, it reads "Nothing in your library yet — add data above and it will open here."
2. Review how each field is re-matched to the new data before the board changes. Its look and pages stay as they are.

The change is "Saved as a new version — you can undo this."

When a board's pages read different tables, you can change one page at a time. The dialog reads "Pick the data for the Overview page", and the other pages keep their data.

### Build a copy of a dashboard on another dataset

**Copy onto another dataset** builds a new dashboard from this one on a different dataset, in three steps:

1. **Pick dataset**: "Pick a dataset to rebuild Sales review on. The AI maps each field, and you review before anything is created." Each dataset shows how well it fits (Partial or Limited). For a large dataset, click **Check fit** to score it.
2. **Review mapping**: one row per field, grouped as Metric, Breakdown and Trend over time. Each shows how well it matched ("92% match", "64% · review", "no match", "your pick" or "will drop"). Change any match by picking another field. A summary counts **9 mapped**, **2 needs you** and **1 dropped**, and a **Live preview** shows the result. Use **Show money as** to keep the currency as your data states it, or show $, £, €, A$, C$, ₹ or ¥.
3. **Confirm** ("Here's what you'll get"): how many fields were re-bound, that the look and format are kept, which charts were reshaped, and any pages left with no charts. Click **Create dashboard**.

The new dashboard opens with the toast "Created Sales review", and is marked "Saved as a copy of Sales review — edits won't sync back."

If some charts would have nothing to show, you're warned first: "3 of 12 charts would be empty on this data. Map their fields, or they'll land on the board blank." If none would: "This data can't fill this board: none of its 12 charts would have anything to show. Pick a different dataset, or map the fields yourself."

It's greyed out until the board has loaded, and hidden while the board is on sample data. To start a new board from one of yours in the **Create** menu, use **Copy one of mine**. See [Create a dashboard](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/dashboards/create/).

## Export a dashboard to Power BI or Tableau

You can export a dashboard as a Power BI or Tableau file with the data inside it. Open the **Publish** caret → **Export to Power BI** or **Export to Tableau**. Or use **Power BI** / **Tableau** under **Download** in the Share panel.

Before you download, the dialog shows what will carry over:

- "Snapshot, taken now. 4,200 rows travel inside the file. It won't follow your Mammoth data."
- "14 of 16 figures carry over", with a **Doesn't carry over** list.
- When little converts: "Most of this dashboard won't convert. What arrives will look sparse next to what you see here."

| Target | Button | Opens in |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Power BI | **Download .zip** | Power BI Desktop, which is Windows only |
| Tableau | **Download .twbx** | Tableau Desktop on Windows or Mac. "The data is inside the file, so there's nothing to connect." |

Export works for dashboards only, not docs or decks, and not on sample data.

## Limits

- **Copy onto another dataset** is greyed out until the board has loaded, and hidden while the board is on sample data.
- A dashboard whose pages read more than one table can only be copied within its own project and can't be exported to Power BI or Tableau. It also can't be saved as a template.
- Power BI and Tableau exports: dashboards only (not docs or decks), not on sample data, editors only. The data is a snapshot taken at export and won't follow your Mammoth data.
- Power BI Desktop is Windows only. Tableau Desktop runs on Windows or Mac.

## Troubleshooting copies and exports

| Message | Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "This dashboard reads more than one table, so it can only be copied within its own project for now." | Its pages read several tables. | Copy it within its project, or combine the tables in the data editor first. |
| "Only editors of this dashboard can export it. Ask its owner for edit access." | You don't have edit access. | Ask the dashboard's owner for edit access. |
| "This dashboard reads more than one table, so it can't be exported to Power BI yet. Export a dashboard that reads one table, or combine the tables in the data editor first." | Its pages read several tables. | Export a dashboard that reads one table, or combine the tables first. See [Join two datasets on a shared column](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/clean-and-shape/join/). |
| "3 of 12 charts would be empty on this data. Map their fields, or they'll land on the board blank." | Some fields didn't match. | Map those fields in **Review mapping**. |
| "This data can't fill this board: none of its 12 charts would have anything to show. Pick a different dataset, or map the fields yourself." | No chart would have data. | Pick another dataset, or map the fields yourself. |
| "Couldn't check what this dashboard would export. Please try again." or "Couldn't build the export. Please try again." | The export failed. | Try again. |
