# Connect Xero to Mammoth and import accounting data

> Connect Mammoth to Xero with a Xero sign-in, pick an organisation's accounting tables and columns, and save them as a dataset that refreshes daily.

The Xero connector imports accounting and financial data from your Xero organisation into Mammoth as a dataset. You sign in to Xero; no API keys are needed. Open it from **Data Library** > **New dataset** > **Connectors** and search for **Xero**. Project Admins create the connection; Project Editors can start datasets from a connection the project already has. Which connectors you can add depends on your plan.

## What you can bring in from Xero

- Accounting tables for the Xero organisations your account can access, and the columns you tick.
- Data you describe in the **Chat**, for example *"which table has invoice due dates?"* The chat helps you find the tables you need.

The dataset can refresh daily or only when you ask.

## Before you connect Xero

You need a Xero account with access to at least one organisation.

## Connect Xero to Mammoth

These steps follow the shared flow in [Connect a database or app](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/get-data-in/connect-a-source/).

1. Go to the **Data Library** and click **New dataset**.
2. Choose **Connectors**.
3. Search for **Xero** and click its tile. The connector workspace opens with the **Chat** showing.
4. In the **Chat**, Mammoth shows a card for connecting Xero. Click its sign-in button.
5. Mammoth sends you to Xero's authorization page. Sign in with your Xero account and authorize Mammoth.
6. You return to Mammoth with the connection active. Mammoth reads the Xero organisations your account can access.

## Pick Xero tables and columns

1. In **Tables**, click a table to see its columns and sample rows.
2. Tick the columns you want. They gather in **Your table**.
3. Click **Preview 100 rows** to check the result.

## Save Xero data as a dataset

1. Click **Save as dataset**.
2. Enter a **Dataset name** and choose a folder under **Save in**.
3. Choose **Daily** to refresh the dataset every day, or **Manual** to refresh it only when you ask.
4. Click **Save**. When the dataset is ready, click **Open dataset**.

## Refresh Xero data and choose an update method

Mammoth imports the data when you save the dataset and on each refresh. Choosing **Daily** creates a [Dataset Refresh](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/automate/refresh-a-dataset/) automation for the dataset. To run it on another schedule, edit that automation. For a dataset saved with **Manual**, create a Dataset Refresh automation yourself.

After you save, the dataset's **Update method** setting offers these options:

| Update method | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Replace all data** | Rebuilds the dataset from the source on every refresh |
| **Add new rows only** | Keeps your rows and adds rows above the last value of a **Key column** |
| **Keep only the newest rows** | Empties the dataset, then brings in rows since the last refresh (needs a **Key column**) |

A key column is a numeric or date column whose values only go up, such as an ID or a date.

## Troubleshoot Xero connections

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Authorization doesn't complete | You closed the tab or denied access | Start the connection again |
| "No profiles could be found for the connection" followed by the connection name | The Xero user has no access to an organisation | Grant the Xero user access to the organisation in Xero |
| Data looks out of date | The dataset was saved with **Manual** | Save with **Daily**, or set up a Dataset Refresh automation |
