# Pick your Mammoth path: analyst, manager or technical user

> Choose a Mammoth learning path for your role: data analysts automate reports, managers organise projects and roles, technical users build templates.

Your role decides where to start. Data analysts begin by turning one recurring Excel report into a pipeline. Managers begin by creating a project, inviting the team and reviewing the Activity Log. Technical users begin by checking SQL and large-data support, then building templates that business users run themselves.

New to Mammoth whatever your role? Do the [Quick start](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/quick-start/) first.

## Which path fits your role?

| I am... | I need... | Go to |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A data or business analyst | Recurring reports that build themselves, without asking IT | [Mammoth for data analysts](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-data-analysts/) |
| A manager of a data team | Visibility into the team's data work, and a team that serves itself | [Mammoth for managers](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-managers/) |
| A data engineer, BI developer or analytics engineer | Repeatable data flows for the team, and fewer one-off requests | [Mammoth for technical users](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-technical-users/) |
| A Workspace Owner or IT administrator setting up the account | Users, projects and API access configured before the team arrives | [Set up your workspace](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/set-up-your-workspace/) |

## Data analyst path: automate recurring reports

![Portrait of Sam, the example data analyst persona](https://mammoth.io/docs/images/getting-started/sam.webp)

You need recurring reports that build themselves, without asking IT. The capabilities to learn:

- File upload and Explore Cards
- Pipeline tasks such as Bulk Replace, Join and Group & Pivot
- Dataset Refresh, Data Consolidation and Messaging automations
- Dashboards, docs and slides built from your data

Focus on automating monthly reporting, building dashboards, docs and slides, sending data to Excel, Google Sheets and BI tools, and scheduling refreshes and emailed reports. Follow the 30-day plan in [Mammoth for data analysts](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-data-analysts/).

## Manager path: organise projects, roles and reporting

![Portrait of Jordan, the example manager persona](https://mammoth.io/docs/images/getting-started/jordan.webp)

You need visibility into your team's data work, and a team that can serve itself. The capabilities to learn:

- Projects, project roles and dashboard sharing
- Dashboards, docs and slides for stakeholders
- Monitor and the Activity Log
- Dashboard audience: who read a dashboard and what they asked

Follow the first-48-hours plan in [Mammoth for managers](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-managers/).

## Technical user path: set up repeatable data flows

![Portrait of Jay, the example technical user persona](https://mammoth.io/docs/images/getting-started/jay.webp)

You need repeatable data flows for your team, and fewer one-off requests. The capabilities to learn:

- Connectors to databases and APIs, and exports back to them
- Joins, lookups, Ask in plain words and other advanced tasks
- Parameters and Snippets reused across pipelines
- The REST API, the `mammoth` CLI and the Mammoth MCP server

Follow the team-enablement plan in [Mammoth for technical users](https://mammoth.io/docs/learn/start/for-technical-users/).

## Coming from Excel or from Alteryx

If you're coming from Excel, start with file uploads and Explore Cards. If you're coming from Alteryx or a similar tool, go straight to connectors and the advanced pipeline tasks.
