The 8 Best Looker Competitors & Alternatives (in 2026)

Looking for the best Looker alternatives in 2026? Honest takes on Mammoth, Tableau, Power BI, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Metabase, Holistics, and Lightdash.

Updated

The short answer

If you like Looker's governed metrics but not its price, Holistics and Lightdash keep a code-based model for less. If the problem is that every change goes through a LookML developer, Mammoth, ThoughtSpot and Sigma let business users build. If your company runs on Microsoft, Power BI Pro is $14 a user a month. If you want something free, Metabase is free to self-host.

Looker alternatives are BI tools that do the job Looker does: they turn the data in your warehouse into dashboards and reports with consistent metric definitions. Some keep Looker's code-based model at a lower price, some drop the model so business users can build, and one also handles the data prep Looker leaves to other tools.

I compared eight of them and checked every price on the vendor's own pricing page on 2 November 2026. Full disclosure: Mammoth is our product, and it's on the list. My Looker pricing breakdown covers what you're paying now.

Why People Leave Looker

Let’s name the problems before we get to the solutions.

LookML. Looker’s proprietary modeling language is genuinely powerful. It’s also a wall that most business users will never climb. Every new metric, every dashboard tweak, every “quick question” from a stakeholder routes through someone who knows LookML. That five minute question becomes a five day wait.

The price. Looker's own pricing page says to contact sales, but Google Cloud's SKU price list puts the Standard edition at $5,000 a month, or $60,000 a year, with 10 Standard users and 2 Developer users included (read 12 October 2026 for my Looker pricing guide). Enterprise and Embed are quote-only, and that's before the cost of the people who write LookML.

It wasn’t built for business users. Looker is a tool for data teams. If your goal is getting analysts, marketers, and ops people to self serve their own insights, Looker will frustrate most of them into filing tickets instead.

It doesn’t do data prep. Looker assumes your data is already clean, modeled, and warehouse ready. For a lot of teams, that’s a big assumption. You end up stitching together ETL tools, a warehouse, and Looker just to get to a dashboard. Our data preparation tools guide covers the full landscape if you’re evaluating your stack.

Ranked List: Looker Competitors & Alternatives

1. Mammoth as a Looker Alternative

The two side by side, a governed semantic layer against an answer before the model exists: Mammoth vs Looker.

Most alternatives on this list have the same core problem as Looker. They’re BI tools that assume someone else already cleaned your data, and they require technical users to operate them properly.

Mammoth isn't.

It’s a no code data platform that handles data preparation, transformation, and AI powered dashboard creation in one place. The whole journey. Not just the visualization layer at the end of it.

The dashboard piece is where it gets interesting. Instead of writing LookML or learning DAX, a business analyst describes what they want to see in plain language and Mammoth builds the dashboard. The model never writes a number: it plans the query, and the values are computed from your data.

Compare that to Looker, where that same request routes through a data engineer, sits in a queue, and comes back days later.

A few other things worth knowing.

Pricing works differently too. Dashboard viewers are free and unlimited on every plan, including the free plan, and paid plans start at $39/month, billed annually. That's a different budget category.

Business users can use it without training. The platform was built for the analyst who understands the data but doesn’t want to learn a proprietary modeling language or file tickets to change a filter.

And if you're not ready to drop an existing Tableau or Power BI setup, Mammoth works alongside it: it can prepare the data and send it on to the BI tool you already use.

Try it free for 14 days. No credit card required.

Best for: Teams who are tired of the gap between people who have data questions and people who can answer them.

2. Metabase as a Looker Alternative

Metabase is simple, clean, and either free if you self host or very affordable on their cloud plans. Business users can build basic charts without knowing SQL. Setup is fast. The UI is one of the friendliest on this list.

The ceiling arrives quickly though. Complex transformations, enterprise governance, and large scale data operations are not what Metabase was built for. Teams tend to outgrow it faster than they expect, usually right when things start getting interesting with their data.

If you need something lightweight and have someone technical to manage the self hosted setup, it’s a solid starting point.

Best for: Small teams, startups, or anyone who needs basic dashboards without enterprise complexity or enterprise pricing.

3. Power BI as a Looker Alternative

Power BI is the obvious move if your organization lives in Microsoft 365. It connects natively to Excel, Azure, Teams, and SharePoint. Pro licenses are $14 per user per month following Microsoft’s April 2025 price increase, which is still significantly cheaper than Looker.

That said, it’s still a BI tool, not an all in one platform. You’ll still need ETL. DAX, while friendlier than LookML for Excel users, has its own learning curve. And business users who don’t live in spreadsheets will still struggle to self serve without training.

If you’re not already deep in the Microsoft ecosystem, there’s less reason to choose it over something built for accessibility from the ground up. See our full Power BI pricing guide and Power BI alternatives if you’re comparing options.

Best for: Microsoft first organizations where most users already work in Excel and Azure.

4. Holistics as a Looker Alternative

Holistics is one of the more underrated picks on this list. It uses a code based modeling approach like Looker, but with better developer ergonomics and a much more reasonable price. If your team likes the governance that comes from a semantic layer but is done paying Looker prices for it, Holistics is worth a hard look.

It's particularly strong for technical teams who want consistent metric definitions without the LookML maintenance burden. Entry is $800 a month billed yearly with the first 10 users included, Standard is $1,000, and extra users are $12.50 a month each.

Best for: Technical teams who want governed, consistent reporting without Looker’s cost or Google’s ecosystem requirements.

5. Lightdash as a Looker Alternative

Lightdash is purpose built for teams already using dbt. It turns your dbt models directly into a BI layer, which means your metric definitions live in version controlled code and your dashboards stay in sync with your data models automatically.

If dbt is already central to your data stack, Lightdash removes a lot of the redundancy that comes from defining the same logic in both dbt and a separate BI tool. You can self-host the open-source version, Cloud Pro is $3,000 a month, and the trial runs 21 days.

Best for: Data teams already invested in dbt who want their BI layer to stay in sync with their transformation layer without manual reconciliation.

6. Sigma Computing as a Looker Alternative

Sigma’s big idea is giving business users a spreadsheet like interface directly on top of your cloud warehouse. No SQL required for basic exploration. For teams where analysts love spreadsheets but hate writing queries, it genuinely lowers the barrier.

The catch is that Sigma assumes you already have a clean, well structured data warehouse. It doesn't solve the upstream data prep problem. Sigma doesn't publish prices, and it offers a free trial.

If your warehouse is in great shape and your bottleneck is analysts not being able to explore data independently, Sigma is worth a serious look.

Best for: Data mature teams with cloud warehouses who want analyst accessible exploration without LookML complexity.

7. ThoughtSpot as a Looker Alternative

ThoughtSpot takes a genuinely different approach. Instead of building dashboards, users type questions in plain English and the platform surfaces answers. Search first analytics, and for non technical stakeholders who just want answers, it can feel almost magical.

Essentials starts at $25 a user a month and Pro at $50, both billed annually, with a free trial. The reality check: the search works well only once the data underneath is modelled, so getting ThoughtSpot configured still takes real technical work upfront.

It solves the “business users can’t get answers” problem differently than most tools. Whether that approach fits your workflow depends on how your team interacts with data day to day.

Best for: Teams with a modelled cloud warehouse who want business users to ask questions in plain language.

8. Tableau as a Looker Alternative

Tableau is the gold standard for visualization. If your team needs genuinely complex analytics, custom calculations, and dashboards that make a BI consultant emotional, Tableau delivers.

The trade off is real though. Tableau Cloud Standard starts at $15 a user a month, billed annually on an annual contract, every deployment needs at least one Creator licence, and Tableau doesn't publish the Creator price on that page. Then there's training, and the Tableau Prep you'll need for data cleaning.

Switching from Looker to Tableau is trading one set of technical dependencies for another. Sometimes that’s the right call. Often it’s not.

We go deeper on this in our Tableau alternatives guide and our Tableau pricing breakdown if you want the full picture.

Best for: Teams with dedicated BI developers who need maximum visualization complexity and have a separate data prep solution already in place.

How to Pick the Right Looker Alternative

Three questions decide it.

Who needs to create dashboards? If it’s only your data team, most tools on this list work. If it’s business users and analysts who don’t know what LookML stands for, the list gets short fast.

Is your data already clean and warehouse ready? Tools like Tableau, ThoughtSpot, and Sigma assume yes. If the answer is no, you’re adding another vendor and another bill to get there. Our BI tools comparison breaks this down across the major platforms if you want to dig in.

What does external sharing cost you? Count every board member, client, and partner who needs dashboard access before you sign anything. Per seat pricing feels manageable until it doesn’t.

The trade-off in every Looker alternative

Most Looker alternatives swap one set of trade offs for another. Pick the set you can live with.

Tableau and Power BI give you more accessibility but don’t touch data prep. Sigma makes exploration friendlier but needs a clean warehouse first. ThoughtSpot is smart but expensive. Metabase is cheap but limited. Holistics and Lightdash are great for technical teams who want code based governance without the Looker price tag.

If the reason you’re leaving Looker is specifically that business users can’t operate it independently and your data team is drowning in requests, most tools on this list won’t fix that.

Mammoth will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free version of Looker?

No, but Looker Studio is free. It's a separate Google product with a similar name: a free dashboard tool, without Looker's LookML model or governance. Among real Looker alternatives, Metabase is free to self-host.

Why is Looker so expensive?

Because it's sold as an enterprise platform. Google's price list puts the Standard edition at $5,000 a month with 10 Standard users and 2 Developer users included, and someone on your team has to write and maintain the LookML that every report depends on.

Is Looker Studio still relevant?

Yes, for free dashboards on Google data such as Analytics, Ads, Sheets and BigQuery. It's a different job from Looker: quick reports for marketers rather than governed metrics for a data team.

What is the cheapest alternative to Looker?

Metabase is free if you host it yourself, and its hosted Starter plan is $100 a month with 5 users included. Power BI Pro is $14 a user a month, paid yearly. Mammoth has a free plan, and dashboard viewers are free on every plan.

If business users being unable to operate the tool independently is the real problem, this is built for exactly that.
