How to get a clean table from a picture

The picture decides most of the result. Four things help.

  • Screenshot if you can

    A screenshot has no angle, shadow or blur.

  • Crop to the table

    Cut out the text around it before you upload.

  • Shoot straight on

    Hold the phone flat above the page, not at an angle.

  • Use good light

    Even light with no shadow across the numbers.

Questions people ask

I want to put image links into a CSV, not read a table from an image.
That's a different job. Upload the images to your store or host, copy their URLs, and paste them into a column of your spreadsheet.
Can I do this in Python instead?
Yes, with an OCR library and pandas. It's worth it for a repeating job inside something you're building. For one image, it's slower than this.
Could I just ask ChatGPT?
For a small, clear table, often yes. It may guess at a cell it can't read, and on a big image it can stop partway. Check the output either way.
How accurate is it?
Good on clear photos and screenshots. Check it against the picture before you rely on it. We haven't measured an accuracy figure for images, so we don't publish one.
What happens to my image?
We read it, send you the file, and delete the image within an hour.
Do I need an account?
No. You only enter a business email, so we can send you the file.
I need a spreadsheet, not a CSV.
Choose Excel at the last step and you get an .xlsx file instead.
What image formats can I use?
JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF and HEIC. HEIC is the format most iPhone photos are saved in.
Will my table's formatting survive?
No. A CSV holds the values only, so colours, borders and merged cells are not kept.
Does it read handwriting?
We haven't tested it on handwriting. It's built for printed and on-screen tables.
