FAQ

Questions people ask

What is invoice data extraction?
Copying the details off an invoice into a spreadsheet or another system. That means fields like the invoice number, dates, supplier, line items and total. This tool reads them off the page for you.
Which fields can it pull?
The ones you ask for. Choose Custom and list them, for example invoice number, due date, supplier name, and each line item with its amount.
What should I type in Custom?
Plain words work. For example: "Invoice number, date, supplier name and total." Or: "One row per line item, with the invoice number on every row." Or: "Just the tax and the total."
Could I just paste it into ChatGPT?
For one clear invoice, often yes. It can guess at a number it can't read, and on a long invoice it can stop partway. Check the output either way.
Is there an AI tool that can read invoices?
Yes, this one. It reads PDFs, scans and photos of invoices, and returns the fields you ask for as an Excel or CSV file.
What is OCR in invoice processing?
OCR turns a picture of text, like a scanned invoice, into text a computer can read. Extraction is the next step: picking out the invoice number, dates and amounts from that text.
Do I need a template for each supplier?
No. It reads each invoice as it is, so a new supplier's layout works the same way.
Does it work on scanned or photographed invoices?
Yes. A PDF from the supplier reads best. For a photo, shoot straight on in good light, then check the total.
How accurate is it?
We haven't measured an accuracy figure for invoices, so we don't publish one. Check the total against the invoice before you rely on it.
Excel or CSV: which should I pick?
Pick Excel if you'll work on it in Excel. Pick CSV if you're importing it into accounting software.
Is this AP automation software?
No. It gets invoice data into a spreadsheet. It doesn't route invoices for approval or pay suppliers.
Can't my accounting software do this?
Some can read a bill you upload or forward. Use this when you want the data in a spreadsheet, or your software doesn't do it.
Do I need an account?
No. Enter any email and the file comes to you. The email also links to your tables in Mammoth; if you're new, opening it creates your account, with no password to set.
What happens to my invoice?
We read it and email you the file. The invoice is deleted within 24 hours.
Why is it free?
It's made by Mammoth. Some people who extract invoices every month go on to automate it with Mammoth. You don't have to.
I get dozens of invoices every month.
Mammoth can do it for you. Put the invoices in a folder and each one is added to the same table, with the fields you chose the first time.

Extract, clean and send it on, every week

Mammoth reads each new file, cleans the data and sends it to your database, SharePoint or a dashboard.
