How to get a clean table from a picture

The picture decides most of the result. Four things help.

  • Screenshot if you can

    A screenshot has no angle, shadow or blur.

  • Crop to the table

    Cut out the text around it before you upload.

  • Shoot straight on

    Hold the phone flat above the page, not at an angle.

  • Use good light

    Even light with no shadow across the numbers.

Can't Excel do this itself?
Often, yes. Excel's Data from Picture reads a photo of a small, clean table. Use this tool when the table is bigger or messier.
Do I get an .xlsx file?
Yes. Choose Excel at the last step and you get an .xlsx. Choose CSV if you'd rather.
Why not convert the JPG to a PDF first?
It adds a step and no information. Every extra conversion is another chance for a column to shift.
How accurate is it?
Good on clear photos and screenshots. Check a few numbers against the picture before you rely on it. We haven't measured an accuracy figure for images, so we don't publish one.
Photo or screenshot?
A screenshot if you can. There's no angle, shadow or blur to get wrong.
Will my table's formatting survive?
The numbers, rows and columns come through. Colours, borders and merged cells in the picture are not rebuilt.
Does it read handwriting?
We haven't tested it on handwriting. It's built for printed and on-screen tables.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. It runs in your web browser. You only enter a business email, so we can send you the file.
What happens to my image?
