SQL Server MCP

SQL Server MCP: ask Claude or ChatGPT about your SQL Server tables.

Connect SQL Server to Mammoth, then add Mammoth to Claude or ChatGPT. Ask about orders by region, revenue by product and invoices by status in plain words. Mammoth calculates the answer, so the numbers are exact.

Your two options

Two ways to connect SQL Server to your AI assistant

Mammoth answers questions about SQL Server and your other data. Microsoft's own server works inside SQL Server. You can add both to the same assistant.

Option 1

Mammoth

Ask about SQL Server and your other data. Mammoth calculates the answer, so the numbers are exact. Included on every plan.

You ask
“How many orders did each region place this quarter?”
Option 2

Microsoft's own server

Reads and writes the records you choose to expose. Uses Data API builder's roles and permissions. You configure and host it yourself.

You ask
“Show the 10 newest rows in the Orders table.”

Option 1 · Mammoth

What you can ask about your SQL Server tables

Pick a question to see what your assistant gets back.

More questions, by team

Pick your team, then copy a question into Claude or ChatGPT.

ClaudeChatGPTVS Code
  • How much did we invoice each month this year?
  • How many invoices are overdue for each customer?
  • What's the average invoice value by region?
  • Which customers owe the most right now?

Copy a question and paste it into your assistant once Mammoth is connected.

Option 1 · Mammoth

Ask about SQL Server and your other data together

Connect SQL Server and any of Mammoth’s 100+ other sources, like Salesforce, Jira or Stripe. Join them once in Mammoth, and your assistant can answer questions that cover all of them.

See all 100+ sources

Example: SQL Server with Salesforce

How much revenue did each Salesforce account bring in last quarter?

SQL Server holds the invoices and Salesforce holds the accounts. Mammoth matches them on the account ID.

Option 1 · Mammoth

Set up SQL Server with Mammoth in three steps

  1. Step 1

    Connect SQL Server to Mammoth

Choose SQL Server from Mammoth's connectors and sign in. Then pick the data you want.

  2. https://mcp.mammoth.io/mcp
    Step 2

    Add Mammoth to your assistant

Paste this address into Claude, ChatGPT or VS Code, then sign in with your Mammoth account.

  3. Step 3

    Ask your question

Ask in Claude or ChatGPT, in plain words. Mammoth works out the numbers and your assistant replies with the answer.

What Mammoth reads from SQL Server

You give Mammoth a database login. It shows every table and view that login can see, and you pick the ones to bring in.

Option 2 · Microsoft's own server

How to set up the official SQL Server MCP server

Microsoft's SQL MCP Server is part of Data API builder, which is free and open source. You choose which tables, views and stored procedures it exposes, and the permissions for each. It doesn't write SQL from plain English. It works through a small, fixed set of tools.

  1. Step 1

    Install Data API builder

SQL MCP Server comes with Data API builder 1.7 and later. It's free and open source.

  2. dab init --database-type mssql --connection-string "<your-connection-string>"
    Step 2

    Point it at your database

Create a config with your connection string, then add the tables and views to expose.

  3. dab start
    Step 3

    Start the server

Run it, then add its address to your assistant.

Common questions about SQL Server MCP

Is there an official SQL Server MCP server?
Yes. Microsoft's SQL MCP Server is part of Data API builder, which is free and open source. You choose which tables, views and stored procedures it exposes, and the permissions for each. It doesn't write SQL from plain English. It works through a small, fixed set of tools. Use it to work inside SQL Server. Use Mammoth to ask questions across SQL Server and your other data.
Does my AI assistant get my database password?
No. You connect SQL Server inside Mammoth, and your assistant signs in to Mammoth with your Mammoth account. The database login never passes through the chat.
How does my assistant get to my SQL Server data?
You connect SQL Server to Mammoth once. Mammoth keeps a copy of the data and updates it on demand or on a schedule. Your assistant asks Mammoth, not SQL Server.
Are the numbers right?
Yes. Mammoth calculates totals, counts and averages itself and gives your assistant the result. The AI model doesn't add up the rows.
Which AI assistants work with it?
Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, ChatGPT, and VS Code. Cursor can't sign in yet, so use the Mammoth CLI there.
What does it cost?
The MCP server is on every Mammoth plan, including Free. The Free plan reads SQL Server, so you can do all of this without paying.
Do I paste a password or API key into the chat?
No. You connect SQL Server inside Mammoth and sign in to Mammoth from your assistant. No password passes through the model.
Can my assistant change things by mistake?
Every tool is labelled as read-only, a change you can undo, or one that deletes or sends data out. You can set your assistant to ask you before it uses anything that isn't read-only.

Ask your AI assistant about your SQL Server tables.
