What is flux analysis?

Flux analysis compares each account's balance or activity between two periods and asks for an explanation of every move above a set threshold, such as 10% and 1,000 in your currency. It is a standard review step in the month-end close.

What it needs

General ledger entries: account, date, amount (or debit and credit)

Ledger entries
  • Account
  • Date
  • AmountDebits positive. Debit and credit columns work too.
  • Account name(optional)

The steps it runs

  1. 1Match columns
  2. 2Last month against the month before

Every step is an ordinary Mammoth step you can open and change.

Flux analysis: questions

Does it compare activity or balances?
Each account's total for the month. Point it at ledger entries and that is the month's activity; point it at month-end balances (one row per account and month) and it compares balances.
Does it update by itself?
Yes. The template becomes an ordinary workflow in Mammoth. When your data refreshes, from a connector, a scheduled pull or a new file, every step runs again and the result table updates.
Can I change the steps?
Every step is an ordinary Mammoth step you can open and edit. Mammoth remembers which steps came from the template, so an update never overwrites your changes.
Do my column names have to match?
No. You point the template at your columns once. Mammoth suggests a match for each one and asks only when it is unsure.
