How to set up the official Xero MCP server

Xero hosts a remote MCP server for apps on its developer platform. It reads and writes Xero data, and its tools do not ask you to confirm first. You need an app in Xero's developer portal, and live organisations need Xero's Core developer plan or above. Xero also publishes an open-source server you run on your own computer.

In the Xero developer portal, create an app that signs in with PKCE. Live organisations need Xero's Core developer plan or above.

Common questions about Xero MCP

Is there an official Xero MCP server?

Yes. Xero hosts a remote MCP server for apps on its developer platform. It reads and writes Xero data, and its tools do not ask you to confirm first. You need an app in Xero's developer portal, and live organisations need Xero's Core developer plan or above. Xero also publishes an open-source server you run on your own computer. Use it to work inside Xero. Use Mammoth to ask questions across Xero and your other data.

Can Mammoth change my Xero books?

No. Mammoth's Xero connection asks only for read access, so it can't create or change anything in Xero.

How does my assistant get to my Xero data?

You connect Xero to Mammoth once. Mammoth keeps a copy of the data and updates it on demand or on a schedule. Your assistant asks Mammoth, not Xero.

Are the numbers right?

Yes. Mammoth calculates totals, counts and averages itself and gives your assistant the result. The AI model doesn't add up the rows.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, ChatGPT, and VS Code. Cursor can't sign in yet, so use the Mammoth CLI there.

What does it cost?

The MCP server is on every Mammoth plan, including Free. Connecting Xero needs a paid plan.

Do I paste a password or API key into the chat?

No. You connect Xero inside Mammoth and sign in to Mammoth from your assistant. No password passes through the model.

Can my assistant change things by mistake?

Every tool is labelled as read-only, a change you can undo, or one that deletes or sends data out. You can set your assistant to ask you before it uses anything that isn't read-only.
