What is a bank reconciliation?

A bank reconciliation checks every line on your bank statement against your own books, so the two balances agree and anything missing, duplicated or mistyped shows up. Most teams do it monthly, by hand, in a spreadsheet.

What it needs

Bank lines and your ledger entries (2 tables)

Bank lines
  • Bank date
  • Bank amountMoney in positive, money out negative.
  • Bank description
Ledger entries
  • Ledger date
  • Ledger amountSame sign as the other side: money in positive.
  • Ledger reference
  • Ledger account(optional)

The steps it runs

  1. 1Match columns: Bank lines
  2. 2Match columns: Ledger entries
  3. 3Bring in ledger entries with the same amount
  4. 4Match each line once, closest date first

Every step is an ordinary Mammoth step you can open and change.

Bank reconciliation: questions

What counts as a match?
The same amount, booked within a few days of each other (3 by default, and you can change it). Each line is used once, closest date first.
My ledger keeps debits and credits in two columns. Does that work?
Yes. Point the amount at both columns and choose which way round they go.
Does it update by itself?
Yes. The template becomes an ordinary workflow in Mammoth. When your data refreshes, from a connector, a scheduled pull or a new file, every step runs again and the result table updates.
Can I change the steps?
Every step is an ordinary Mammoth step you can open and edit. Mammoth remembers which steps came from the template, so an update never overwrites your changes.
Do my column names have to match?
No. You point the template at your columns once. Mammoth suggests a match for each one and asks only when it is unsure.
