Hide, show, rename and reorder columns in a View
The Column Browser is a floating panel in the data editor for finding, hiding, showing and exploring a View's columns. Open it with the Column Browser button at the left edge of the data grid; its Column Manager renames, retypes, reorders, removes and adds columns. Both need edit access: the button is unavailable in a View-only workspace.
Open the Column Browser
- Open a View.
- Click the Column Browser button (the column icon) at the left edge of the data grid. You can also click the column count in the status bar below the grid ("12 columns", or "9 of 12 columns" when some are hidden).
The button's tooltip reads "Search and select columns to hide, show, explore, rename, reorder or retype." The panel opens as a floating dropdown with the search box ready.
Hide columns, Show columns, Show only these and Column Manager are also unavailable when:
- the grid is in edit mode or preview mode (exit it first);
- the pipeline has a task in error.
What changes affect only this View and what changes the dataset
| Change | Where | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or show columns | Column Browser or Column Manager | This View only |
| Open in Explore Columns | Column Browser | This View only |
| Rename, change type, or remove a source column | Column Manager | You choose: this View only, or the entire dataset |
| Reorder columns, add a column, change columns created by pipeline tasks | Column Manager | This View only |
| Add batch info | Column Manager | Dataset: all Views of the dataset are affected |
| Copy column names | Column Manager | Your clipboard only |
When you save a source-column change in the Column Manager, Mammoth asks Apply changes to… with This view only or Entire dataset. Changes to the entire dataset modify the dataset schema for all Views, and Mammoth warns that they may affect other Views, pipelines and connections that use the columns.
Find and select columns in the Column Browser
The panel has two sides.
- Left: the column list. At the top are a select-all checkbox, a Bulk select dropdown and a Search columns… box. Each row shows a checkbox, position number, type icon (Text, Numeric or Date, the same icons as the grid headers), column name and an eye button. Hidden columns are dimmed. A pin icon marks frozen columns, and an Explore icon marks columns that already have an Explore Card. The bottom reads "Showing all 12 columns", or "Showing 9 out of 12 columns", plus the number selected.
- Right: actions. The Actions list (Hide columns, Show columns, Show only these, Open in Explore Columns) and the Column Manager button.
Tick one or more columns to turn the actions on. Type in Search columns… to filter the list; matching text is highlighted, and "No matching columns" shows when nothing matches.
Select columns by type or visibility
Click the arrow beside the select-all checkbox (Bulk select). Each option applies to the columns currently listed, so a search narrows it.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text, Numeric, Date (under Filter by type) | Shows only columns of that type and selects them. Choose the same type again to show all columns |
| Visible Columns | Selects the visible columns |
| Hidden Columns | Selects the hidden columns |
| Invert selection | Flips the current selection |
Hide or show columns in a View
These actions change only the current View. Hidden columns leave the grid but stay in the dataset.
| Action | What it does | Available when |
|---|---|---|
| Hide columns | Hides the selected columns | At least one selected column is visible |
| Show columns | Shows the selected hidden columns | At least one selected column is hidden |
| Show only these | Hides every column except the selected ones | One or more columns selected |
To hide or show one column, click the eye button on its row.
Open several columns as Explore Cards
Open in Explore Columns opens an Explore Card for each selected column. It adds to the cards already open rather than replacing them. It works for any column type, and it also works in edit mode and preview mode. It is unavailable when every selected column already has its card open.
Rename, retype, reorder or remove columns in the Column Manager
Click Column Manager in the Column Browser. Its tooltip explains that you can rename columns, change their type, reorder, hide or remove them in this View or across the whole dataset. It is unavailable in edit mode, preview mode, when the pipeline is in error, and in View-only workspaces.
The Column Manager is a table of your columns with position, type icon, name, data type, source and a Visible toggle. Your edits collect as pending changes; the footer counts them ("3 pending changes"). Nothing is saved until you click Save changes. Discard changes throws them away.
| To do this | Do this |
|---|---|
| Rename a column | Click the name or the edit icon and type. The row shows old name → new name, with Undo rename. Every column needs a name, and two columns can't share one |
| Change a column's type | Use the Data type dropdown on the row: Text, Number or Date |
| Reorder columns | Drag a row by its handle (Drag to reorder) |
| Hide or show | Use the row's Visible toggle |
| Remove a column | Click the row's remove button. The row is struck through and shows Removed; Restore column brings it back before you save |
| Add a column | Click Add column, then name and type the new row |
| Rename all columns to one style | Format names rewrites every name as snake_case, camelCase or Title Case. Describe lets you describe the format ("Describe the format you need...") and click Generate for AI-proposed names |
| Copy names | Copy column names copies them to your clipboard |
Each row shows a label for its pending change: New, Removed, Renamed, Reordered or Type changed.
Change several columns at once
Tick several rows. A floating bar shows "4 selected" with actions to hide, show, show only these, remove, change type, format the names, or clear the selection. The arrow beside the select-all checkbox (Select by filter) selects Text, Numeric or Date columns, visible or hidden columns, or inverts the selection.
Save Column Manager changes
- Click Save changes.
- If you structurally changed a column that comes from the source data, choose under Apply changes to…:
- This view only: "Affects only" the current View; the dataset and other Views stay unchanged. Renames, reordering and visibility apply directly as View display settings. Structural changes (adding, removing or retyping columns) open the Functions panel with the matching task so you can review it.
- Entire dataset: "Modifies the dataset schema for all views."
- If other tasks, Views or metrics still use a column you are retyping or removing, Mammoth warns you. Confirm or cancel.
Reordering, hiding and showing, new columns and columns created by pipeline tasks apply to this View only, without the question.
Add batch info columns to a dataset
Batch info columns add details of the batch each row came in with, such as its ID and date. They apply to the whole dataset.
- In the Column Manager toolbar, click Add batch info. A dropdown titled Add Batch Info to Dataset opens, with the note "All views of this Dataset will be affected."
- Tick the columns you want. Untick one added earlier to remove it.
- Submit.
| Column | Type |
|---|---|
| Batch ID | Number |
| Date | Date |
| Source (JSON) | Text |
| Name | Text |
| Row Count | Number |
New columns are named with a batch_ prefix: batch_ID, batch_Date, batch_Source, batch_Name and batch_RowCount. They are managed for the whole dataset and can't be renamed or retyped. Remove one with its delete button in the Column Manager, or with Add batch info.
Troubleshooting the Column Browser
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Column Browser button is unavailable | The workspace is View-only | Ask for edit access |
| Hide, show and Column Manager are greyed out | The grid is in edit or preview mode, or a pipeline task is in error | Exit the mode, or fix the failing step |
| Open in Explore Columns is greyed out | Every selected column already has a card | Select a column without a card |
| A rename asks where to apply it | The column comes from the source data | Choose This view only or Entire dataset |
