Use Mammoth on a phone: read, filter and check a View

When you open a View's link on a touch phone, Mammoth shows a read mode built for a small screen instead of the full data editor. You can read rows, search, sort and filter them for yourself, use Explore cards, check metrics, and look through the pipeline. You can't add or change steps on a phone: open the View on a computer for that.

The phone layout is used on touch phones, held either way up. A tablet and a desktop browser get the normal data editor, even in a narrow window.

What's on the phone screen

The top bar shows the dataset name, then the View name and the row count, for example "Orders · 1,240 rows". When your search or filters narrow the rows, it reads "120 of 1,240 rows". The back arrow returns to where you came from, or to the Data Library.

Under the title are three buttons:

ButtonWhat it opens
ExploreShows or folds the Explore cards above the rows. With filters on, it reads Explore · 2 filters
StepsThe View's pipeline and its health. It reads Steps · 5 once the steps load. A Draft badge shows when there are draft changes
MetricsThe View's metrics. It reads Metrics · 3 when the View has metrics

Held sideways, these buttons move into the top bar, and the Explore cards stack in a column beside the rows.

Read rows on a phone

The rows show as a grid. The first column stays pinned while you swipe the rest sideways. More rows load as you scroll, 100 at a time.

Tap a row to open all its fields in a sheet. The subtitle shows where you are, for example "Row 3 of 1,240". Use Previous row and Next row to move, and Copy row to copy the row as "column: value" lines.

If the View can't be read, you see "Couldn't load this view." and a Try again button. If your search and filters leave nothing, you see "No rows match."

Search rows on a phone

The search box (Search 1,240 rows) finds rows where any text column contains what you type. Case doesn't matter. Number and date columns are not searched.

Sort, filter and pin a column on a phone

Tap a column heading to open its sheet.

OptionWhat it does
A → Z / Z → ASorts a text column. On a number or date column the buttons read Lowest first and Highest first. Tap the same button again to remove that sort
Pin columnKeeps this column on the left while the rest scroll. Unpin column lets it scroll again
Show only rows with these valuesFor a text column: lists its values with counts. Tick the values to keep, then tap the button below the list (Show only this value, Show only these 3 values, or Show all rows when none are ticked). Clear removes the ticks
Range summaryFor a number or date column: Rows (how many rows have a value), Lowest, Highest, and Average for numbers

Sorting a second column adds to the first; its chip reads "then" and the column name. Up to 2,000 rows are read in full to sort. On a bigger result, the sort covers the rows read so far, and the chip says "Sorted by" the column, "first 2,000 rows".

Each sort and value filter appears as a chip above the grid, for example "Sorted by amount ↓" or "region: 2 values". Tap a chip to remove it.

The column sheet notes "Sorting and filters here change only your view." Your search, sort and filters are not saved to the View, and nobody else sees them.

Show or hide columns on a phone

Tap the eye button beside the search box to open Columns. Untick a column to hide it. A badge on the button counts hidden columns. As the sheet says, "Show or hide columns here. Only your view changes." Columns hidden in the data editor are not listed.

See where a column comes from

The bottom of a column's sheet shows Where it comes from:

LineMeaning
"Came with the source data"The column was in the source
"Made in step 3 · Math"The step that created the column. Tap it to see the data after that step
"Made from" the columnsThe columns that step read to make it
"Changed in step 4 · Replace"A later step that changed the column
"Used in step 5 · Filter"A later step that reads the column
"Used in the metric" and the metric's nameA metric built on the column. Tap it to open the metric

If nothing uses the column, it reads "Nothing in the pipeline or the metrics uses this column." Tap Explore this column to add its Explore card.

Use Explore cards on a phone

Explore shows the same Explore cards as the data editor, one card per screen width. Swipe sideways to move between them. See Explore Cards.

  1. Tap Add a card, then pick a column. Use Find a column to search the list. The new card goes first.
  2. Tap values on a card to select them.
  3. Tap the card's Filter button. There is no double-click on a phone.

A filter on a card filters the rows and the metrics too. When you fold the cards, the filters stay as pills: the column name and its values, or "not" the values for an exclude. Tap a pill to remove that filter, or Clear to remove them all.

Check metrics on a phone

Metrics lists the View's metrics with their values. Metrics are read-only on a phone: they are made in the data editor on a computer. A View with none shows "This view has no metrics yet. They are made in the data editor on a computer."

Metrics follow your search and filters, and the sheet says so, for example "Metrics follow your filters: 120 of 1,240 rows." A metric locked in the data editor keeps its own filter and shows a lock icon.

Tap a metric to open it:

PartWhat it shows
TagYour filters, All rows, or Fixed filter for a locked metric
Value over all rowsWhen your filters are on: "All rows:" the full value, and what share of it the filtered value is
ReadsThe columns the metric uses
Rows countedHow many rows went into the value. Its own filter for a locked metric
Copy valueCopies the value

How metrics are built: Metrics.

Check pipeline steps and health on a phone

Steps opens the View's pipeline: the source, each step in order, and the Outputs the View sends data to. The sheet's subtitle sums up its health:

StatusMeaning
Up to dateNothing needs a look
Pipeline runningThe pipeline is still running
"2 steps need a look"Steps with an Error, a Check failed, or a checkpoint that Needs approval
"1 output out of date"An output has not received the latest data
"3 draft changes not applied"Someone has draft changes waiting

A step card is marked when it needs a look. A data check shows how many checks failed, for example "1 of 3 checks failed".

When there are draft changes, the rows you see are the applied pipeline's, not the draft's. A notice under the title says how many draft changes are waiting. Review them on a computer.

Open a step and add a note

Tap a step to open it. The sheet shows the step's rule, the problem if there is one, the Columns changed (Added or Changed), Rows after, who added it and when, and its Note. Write or edit a note with Add note. A note is a comment saved with the step and does not change the data.

Where the data editor would offer to add a task, the list reads "To add or change steps, open this view on a computer."

See the data after a pipeline step

  1. In a step's sheet, tap See the data after this step. The rows screen shows the data as it stood after that step, for example "After step 2 of 5 · Filter".
  2. The columns the step changed come first and are tinted. Tap Only its column (or Only its 2 columns) to show only those.
  3. Use the arrows to move one step back or forward, or tap Latest to return to the current data.

Your Explore cards follow the step you're looking at. Metrics are not shown while you look at an earlier step.

Send an output now from a phone

An output that can be sent now shows a Run now button, on its card and in its sheet.

  1. Tap Run now.
  2. Check the confirmation: "Send the latest data to" the destination, and "You can't undo a send."
  3. Tap Send now.

If it fails, you see "Couldn't send. Try again, or open the view on a computer."

Run now is offered only when the output can be sent: not while it is already sending, while the pipeline has an error, or while there are unapplied draft changes. Live links and outputs with auto-sync on don't offer it.

Switch draft mode on a phone

When the View has a draft mode setting, the top of the sheet shows Draft mode with "Tasks will be pending" or "Tasks will be applied instantly". You can switch it here as on a computer. It can't be switched while the pipeline is running, while a step is failing, or while draft changes are waiting, and the sheet says which.

In a view-only workspace, you can read the steps but can't write notes, send outputs or switch draft mode.
