Mammoth error messages: what they mean and how to fix them
Each error message below is quoted as Mammoth shows it, with what causes it and how to fix it. Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for the words you see. Where a message names your own item, the example uses a sample name such as Sales 2026.
The Activity Log records changes, not errors. It still helps you match an error to a recent change, such as an edited pipeline or a deleted connection. See Activity log.
General error messages
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "An error has occurred. Please try again, and if the problem persists, contact support" | Mammoth couldn't complete the action and has no more specific reason to show | Try again. If it keeps happening, contact support with what you were doing |
| "Unable to connect to the network, please check your network connection" | Your browser couldn't reach Mammoth | Check your connection or VPN, then try again |
| "This is taking longer than expected. The import may still complete — check your data library in a few minutes before retrying." | An import is still running after Mammoth stopped waiting for it | Check the Data Library in a few minutes before you import again, so you don't create a duplicate |
| "Runtime error. Contact support for help." | A task or job failed on the server | Check the task's settings (see Pipeline task error messages). If nothing looks wrong, contact support |
Sign-in and permission errors
Sign-in or API credentials rejected (401)
Your session or API token is invalid, expired or missing, so the request is refused with HTTP status 401. In the app, Mammoth first tries to renew your session. If that fails, sign in again.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- If you use two-factor authentication, check that the time on your authenticator app is correct. See Security.
- If you forgot your password, reset it from the sign-in page. Asking for too many resets shows "Password reset limit reached. Please try again tomorrow".
- For API calls, check that the token is sent and hasn't been revoked. See API errors.
"You lack the necessary permissions for this action. Please contact your admin for assistance." (403)
You're signed in, but your role doesn't allow the action, so the request is refused with HTTP status 403. Some screens show the shorter "User lacks permission" or "You don't have permission to modify this item."
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your project role doesn't allow the action (for example, a Project Editor trying to delete the project) | Ask a Project Admin to do it or to change your role. See Members, roles and custom roles |
| You were removed from the project or workspace | Ask a Workspace Owner to add you back |
| You're in the wrong workspace | Switch workspace from the workspace menu |
A feature your plan doesn't include shows a premium icon and an upgrade prompt, or asks you to contact the Workspace Owner, instead of this error. See What happens when you reach a plan limit.
A connection's key expired
Credentials for an external source stopped working: an OAuth sign-in expired, a password changed at the source, or an API key was rotated. The connection shows Error, and the Connectors launcher lists it under Needs attention with key expired. Open it and use Edit connection to sign in again or enter the new key. Only a Project Admin can repair a connection ("Only a project admin can repair this connection."). See Fix connection and refresh failures.
File upload error messages
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "The file is too large to upload" | The upload is over 50 MB. A folder upload counts as one upload | Split the file, remove columns or rows you don't need, or bring the data in through a connector. See Limits and quotas |
| "“sales.pdf” was not added: its file type is not supported, or it is too large." (or "3 files were not added because their type is not supported or they are too large:" with a list) | The picker refused the file before upload | Check the file type against the supported formats in Upload files and the 50 MB limit |
| "This file seems to be corrupt" | Mammoth couldn't read the file. "It cannot be turned into a dataset. Delete it, then upload a corrected file." | Re-export or re-download the file, delete the broken dataset, and upload again |
| "File couldn’t be uploaded due to possible corruption or security risks" | The virus scan flagged the file as dangerous | The file can't be imported. Get a clean copy from its source |
| "Access to this file is protected by a password" | The file is password-protected | Enter the File password. A wrong one shows "Invalid password, please enter a valid password" |
| "Content too large to paste. Use the file upload option instead." | The browser couldn't hand over the pasted data | Save the data as a file and upload it |
You can't add or replace data in a dataset with a ZIP file that holds more than one file. See Add or replace data.
Characters look garbled after upload
The file uses a character encoding other than UTF-8, so accented or special characters appear garbled. Save the file as UTF-8 and upload it again. In Excel, use Save As and choose CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited).
Dates or columns are read wrongly
If Mammoth can't tell whether dates are day first or month first, the dataset's panel asks Which way round are these dates?. If columns appear merged, open How it was read to set the delimiter and header row. See How Mammoth reads your files.
Errors when adding data to a dataset (schema errors)
When you add data to an existing dataset, the dataset's If column type doesn't match and Column mapping settings decide what happens to columns that differ. See Add or replace data.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Datasources with mismatching schemas cannot be appended" | The new data's columns don't match the dataset, and the settings don't allow the difference | Compare the new file with an earlier one. Re-export it with the same columns, adjust the column mapping, or use Replace all data if the file should replace the dataset |
| "Some of the Numeric or Date columns had error values, these columns have been converted to text columns" | A Number or Date column held values that couldn't be read as that type, such as N/A or TBD, so it became text | Clean the values, then use a Convert Column Type task to convert the column back |
| "Column mapping is not valid" | The saved mapping doesn't fit the incoming columns | Review the dataset's column mapping and save it again |
| "Current settings are affected due to schema change" | The dataset's columns changed, so settings that used them no longer fit | Review the settings it names and update them |
Pipeline task error messages
When a task fails, the pipeline shows This pipeline has errors with "Fix the failing tasks to continue", and the failing task is outlined in red with its message. Start with the first failing task: later tasks often fail only because an earlier one did. See Fix a failing step for each kind of failure.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Column missing" | The task uses a column that no longer exists at that point | Update the task to the column's new name, or restore the column |
| "Column type mismatch" | The task got a column type it can't use, such as text in a calculation | Add a Convert Column Type task before it |
| "Dependency pipeline in error" | The task reads from another View (for example, a Join or Lookup) whose pipeline has an error | Fix the other View's pipeline first |
| "Operation not allowed when pipeline is in error" | You tried an action that needs a healthy pipeline | Fix the failing tasks first |
| "Some columns are invalid or missing, possibly due to changes in the foreign view. Please try again." | A Join or Lookup uses a column the other View no longer has | Open the other View and check its columns, then edit the task |
| "This step would make more rows than the limit. Use fewer values or a smaller range." | The task would create too many rows | Use fewer values or a smaller range |
| "The current transformation is still in progress. This operation is temporarily disabled." | The pipeline is still running | Wait for it to finish, then try again |
| "This action cannot proceed because the pipeline is halted by a blocking checkpoint or data check" | A checkpoint or Data Check stopped the pipeline | Approve the checkpoint or fix the data the check flagged. See Checkpoints and Monitor |
Math Function and date format errors
A Math Function expression that can't be read shows a message such as "Column Revenue is missing" or "Syntax error: unmatched brackets". See Fix a failing step. A date format Mammoth can't use shows "Format for date is invalid. Select a valid date format".
A join returns no rows or too many rows
No matches usually means the key values differ in case, spacing or type. Too many rows means the key has duplicates: Mammoth warns "Key column(s) have non-unique values". See Fix a join that returns zero rows and Fix a join that returns too many rows.
Automation error messages
A failed automation shows Error, and Last run result in its detail panel gives the reason. Fix the cause, then use Run now. Mammoth doesn't retry a failed run on its own. See Manage automations.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "The dataset this automation refreshes is no longer available." | The dataset was deleted or moved to Trash | Restore it from Trash, or edit the automation |
| "One or more selected datasets do not have a valid connection for data retrieval" | A dataset in a Dataset Refresh has no working connection | Repair the connection, then run the automation |
| "Schema mismatch, source to destination schema should be same" | A Data Consolidation source doesn't match the destination's columns | Make the source match, or change the destination. See Combine incoming data |
| "No datasets found in source folder for data append" | The consolidation's source folder is empty | Add files to the folder, or pick another folder |
| "The scheduled time cannot be in the past or within the next 2 minutes." | The schedule start is too soon | Pick a later time |
| "End date cannot be sooner than the start of the schedule" | The schedule's end is before its start | Fix the dates |
A file whose columns don't match a Data Consolidation's destination doesn't fail the automation. It shows Files not added instead.
Plan and storage limit messages
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Maximum storage limit exceeded" or "Storage quota exceeded" | Free space in Manage storage (see Storage), or ask a Workspace Owner to add storage |
| "This workspace has used this month's AI generations. They reset on the 1st, or choose a plan with more." | Wait for the reset, or ask a Workspace Owner to change the plan |
| "This workspace exceeds its plan's limits. Remove the items over the limit or upgrade your plan to continue." | Remove the items over the limit, or change the plan |
| "You have already added the maximum number of connectors included in your plan" | Delete a connection you no longer use, or change the plan |
| "The workspace has reached the user limit of its plan" | Remove a user, or move to a plan with more users |
| "Your plan's published-dashboard limit is reached. Unpublish one or upgrade to publish this dashboard." | Unpublish a dashboard, or change the plan |
See Limits and quotas for each plan's allowances.
Dashboard error messages
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This dashboard may have been removed or you no longer have permission to view it." | The dashboard was deleted or unpublished, or your access was removed | Ask the dashboard's editor to check it and your access |
| "This board is still on sample data. Swap in your own data before publishing." | The board was made from a template and still uses its sample | Connect your own data, then publish |
| "Couldn't load updates. Please try again." | The Updates window couldn't load the sync status | Try again |
| "Failed to export dashboard as PDF. Please try again." | The PDF export failed | Try again |
For blank or stale dashboards, see Fix dashboard problems.
Trash error messages
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot move to Trash. with the items that block it | Another view, an automation, or a dashboard you can't edit depends on the item | Remove the dependency, or ask an editor. See Trash |
| "Cannot move to Trash while the item's pipeline has active work. Try again once it finishes." | The item's pipeline is running | Wait for it to finish, then try again |
API rate limit: "Rate limit exceeded." (429)
You sent too many API requests in the current one-minute window. The API answers with HTTP status 429, the message "Rate limit exceeded." and a Retry-After: 60 header. Wait the number of seconds in Retry-After, then send the request again. If you keep hitting the limit, spread requests out or batch them. See API rate limits and API errors.
import time
import requests
def api_call_with_retry(url, data, max_retries=3):
for attempt in range(max_retries):
response = requests.post(url, json=data)
if response.status_code != 429:
return response
# Wait as long as the server asks (60 seconds by default)
wait_time = int(response.headers.get("Retry-After", 60))
time.sleep(wait_time)
return response # Final attempt
